I'm an amateur filmmaker, so I'm very interested in potentially using drones for filmmaking. That seems to be a major trend. What filmmaker doesn't want a beautiful aerial establishing shot to start off an important scene?Happily, this book is actually mostly devoted to that very topic. First there is the ubiquitous (and mostly useless) chapter on the history of drones and all that. BORING. Then it gets down to "business". It talks about different types of drones, different approaches to camera support (integrated or add-on) and then talks about the various camera options, and criteria for selecting the type of drone/camera setup to meet your needs. Plus lots more about drone photography strategies and logistics and such.It has a good chapters on drone safety, legal matters, and another on generic drone maintenance, and a couple chapters on the actual act of flying the drone, with lots of types, general information, and do's and don'ts. And then at the VERY end of the book it devotes a few pages to other drone uses.Overall, if you are interested in learning more about the possibility of getting a drone for photography (either still or moving images) then this is a great starting place. There is lots of and lots of great info here and it starts from the very beginning, not assuming you have any drone experience or knowledge going in. Most of the info is fairly generic, there isn't much analysis of different brands and models for example.I'm definitely glad that I got this book, but if your interest in drones is for something other than photography, then you might want to select a different book. 90% of the content is about photography.
I read quite a few "For dummies" books and unfortunately this has been one of the most disappointing ones.I expected that after reading the book I would have a basic understanding on how a drone works, an insight on its components, dynamics and the general knowledge on how to operate a drone at a basic level or maybe even how to proceed in case I would like to build my own.Unfortunately I found none of the above.What was most irritating is how little there is actually on drones. Most of the book is about how to shop or behave on the internet, basic and watered down introductions on related consumer electronics (cameras, editing software etc..) and somewhat product specific reviews that (naturally) are already outdated. All this might be useful advice to anyone who is a dummy about most of contemporary consumer electronics, yet it should not become the main point of a volume that is supposed to speak about drones.Each section starts with way too long introductions, which seam to have the only function to add text.Once all such "bloatware" we are left with about 30% of drone specific text, which is mainly an edited extract from various user manuals, as the book only speaks about ready-to-fly platforms, basically becoming a purchasing guide for products that are already outdated.The same obsolescence issue affects the legal section: it should be updated ASAP, as with recent regulation changes readers might get into trouble.The book often tells you about what you should pay attention to, without actually telling you how you are supposed to do it.Is it all bad? Off course it isn't! Among all the bloatware, incorrect phrases ("such as high rate of speed" to indicate speed) and repetitions there is plenty of good advice for starters, especially in the safety section. Nevertheless when purchasing a book I expect to receive more structured information than what I can receive by a 10 min. google search. Personally I found more and better structured information on http://myfirstdrone.com/ than in this volume.
Probably the worst cobbled together anything for dummies. It's certainly not current. It reads like somebody grabbed a bunch of different subjects and threw them together randomly. Multiple sections with repeat text/pictures, no real cohesive thought and the picture quality is absurdly awful! Even my drone instructor admits that the book is dreadful! I cannot believe that some of the folks who rated this book as 4 or 5 were even look at the same volume. Deserves less than a 1.
This book is totally obsolete, There are no useful sections. If you have a newer DJI drone this book will not help you in any way.
This is a book lacking in substance. I read it through and felt I learned almost nothing about drones or anything else.
This book predates the new FAA 14 CFR Part 107 regulations.It provides good background and useful tips for buying and operating a drone. But the drone models that is discusses are somewhat dated and much of the discussion about regulations are no longer current.; but it does highlight some ideas for best practice.
This book is seriously out of date and should be revised to reflect the current FAA rules and more recent drone models.
